Ashley Rachelle Davis, 18-year-old daughter of Butler pastor Terry Davis and his wife, Kay, died July 2 as a result of a canoeing accident on the Meramec River near Steelville.

The teen was participating in a float trip with other members of the youth group of First Baptist Church in Butler, where her father is the pastor, when the canoe in which she and a friend were floating struck a log and overturned.

According to new reports, Ashley was trapped under the canoe, which was pinned against the log. Her friends were able to turn over the canoe and pull her from the river, but attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by three sisters, Catherine Joline Davis, Stacy Lynn Davis and Lindsay Michelle Davis, all of Butler; maternal grandparents Vernon and Clareca Maxted of Marshall; paternal grandfather Harold Davis of Orange, Calif.; two nephews; one niece; two uncles; and three aunts.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother Mary Helen Davis and an aunt, Gayle Charles.

Funeral services were held July 7 at the church, with her grandfather, Vernon Maxted, officiating and her father and Michael Norman assisting. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Butler.

Contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, Butler, or to the Davis Memorial Fund in care of Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel or BC National Bank, both in Butler.
