A well-liked old pastor friend had a way with words. He had a particular expression he used when certain Baptist leaders died. “A mighty oak has fallen,” he would say, usually prompting a chorus of “amens.”

My phone beeped as I drove from St. Louis to my home in Jefferson City, Mo., late Tuesday (March 5) afternoon. I checked the message when I pulled over to refill my gas tank and discovered long-awaited news – good news. It was from my brother, Randy.

Craig Fields, longtime senior pastor of Jefferson Avenue Baptist Church in Springfield, Mo., who was high on the list for a second lung transplant should a set become available, might be entering transplant surgery soon. A set of lungs was available and – pending tests to determine compatibility – could be the match for which Craig and his family had been anxiously awaiting.

The unexpected resignation of Pope Benedict XVI overshadowed every other news story on Feb. 11. The announcement that Benedict would leave office at the end of February was significant news not only for the earth’s 1.2 billion Catholics but people of all faiths – including us Baptists.

Imagine coaching in the NFL Super Bowl. Then imagine coaching against your brother in the Super Bowl. I tried but I couldn’t imagine the effect of such a game on my relationship with my sibling Randy moments, days, weeks, months and years after the game.

The inauguration of an African-American president and the celebration of the contributions of Martin Luther King Jr. on the same day underscored progress in America in the arena of civil rights.
